Phenolic resins are modified with cashew nut shell liquid, or tall oil, or are unmodified phenol formaldehyde resin. They are premixed with hexamine as curing agent. Incorporation of these resins in rubber compounds enhances resistance towards heat, water, oil, hydrocarbons, etc. while improving mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength and abrasion resistance.

PHENOLIC REINFORCING NOVALAK RESIN
Phenolic novalak resins are modified with cashew nut shell liquid, or tall oil, or are unmodified phenol formaldehyde resin with very low residual free phenol levels. Novalak resins require the addition of hexamine to make them thermosetting. These are designed for high temperature compounding cycles where the early presence of hexamine could result in scorching.
